Maqām Festival Ensemble
at the 81st Sagra Musicale Umbra

The Maqām Festival Ensemble performs at the 81st Sagra Musicale Umbra in Perugia with Dell’Amore divino, a maqām oratorio devoted to mystical poetry and divine love across Christian and Islamic traditions.

Conceived by Nidaa Abou Mrad, the programme brings together the Arab maqām tradition, improvisation and vocal performance through texts associated with St Paul, St Symeon the New Theologian, St Francis of Assisi, Rābiʿa al-ʿAdawiyya, al-Ḥusayn ibn Manṣūr al-Ḥallāj, Muḥyī al-Dīn Ibn ʿArabī, and Imam ʿAlī Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn.

البرنامج

حفل سماع مقاميّ في العشق الإلهيّ

يجمع "حفل سماع مقاميّ في العشق الإلهيّ" بين المناجاة الروحيّة والشعر الصوفيّ وبين التلحين والارتجال العزفيّ والغنائيّ التقليديّ المقاميّ المشرقيّ العربيّ. أمّا نصوص الحبّ الإلهيّ، فهي مأخوذة من نشيد المحبّة من رسالة القدّيس بولس الرسول الأةلى إلى أهل كورتثوس، من مناجاة المحبِّين، الواردة في الصحيفة السُّجّادية للإمام عليّ زين العابدين بن الحسين (ع.س. 38-95 ه)، ومن كتاب أناشيد الحبّ الإلهيّ، للقدّيس سمعان اللاهوتيّ الحديث (949-1022)، ومن أشعار أولياء التصوّف في العشق الإلهيّ، رابعة العدويّة (713 أو 717-801) والحسين بن منصور الحلاّج (858-922) ومحيي الدين ابن عربيّ (1165-1240)، ومن نشيد "الأخت الشمس" للقدّيس فرنسيس الأسّيزيّ (1181-1226).

أمّا نسق التلحين والارتجال، فهو الذي تسلّمه أعضاء تخت ملتقى الموسيقى المقامية من التقليد الموسيقيّ الفنّيّ لمدرسة النهضة العربيّة، المعروفة بمدرسة عبده الحمولي (1843-1901). وقد انتقى الدكتور نداء أبو مراد، النصوصَ الروحانيّة ولحّنها، متّبعًا أسلوب التلحين المُعتمَد في تقليد النهضة العربيّة، وهو ينتهج في عزفه على الكمان أسلوب التأويل الارتجاليّ، وهو ما يعتمده أيضًا أعضاء التخت.

Maqām Festival - Multaqā Al-Mūsīqā Al-Maqāmiyya

We celebrate modal/maqām musical traditions of West Asia, North Africa and Europe. Merging research, transmission and performance, we aim to ensure that maqām music (a cornerstone of Arab heritage) can be received in a relevant and moving way by a large contemporary audience.

Nidaa Abou Mrad (composition & violin)

MD and PhD in Musicology, currently Senior Professor of Musicology, Neuropsychology of Music and Music Therapy at Sorbonne Université (Paris), Institut de recherche en Musicologie (UMR 8223) and coordinator of the international scientific network “Music, neuroscience and therapy” at the Collegium Musicæ, Sorbonne Université, at the same time as the Dean of the Faculty of Music and Musicology and the Director of the Research Centre for Music Traditions at the Antonine University (Lebanon), the editor in chief of the peer reviewed journal titled Revue des traditions musicales, the coordinator for the development of new school education programs in Lebanon (Center for Research and Educational Development) and the Scientific Director and Artistic Advisor to Maqām Festival (Multaqā Al-Mūsīqā Al-Maqāmiyya). He has published a large number of articles and authored the book titled Elements of Modal Semiotics: An Essay on Generative Grammar for Monodic Traditions, in which he drew his own theory on the Modal Semiotics and for which he won the CNRS-L Annual Research Excellence Award in 2017, in the category “Multidisciplinary cognitive research”. As a violin player and a composer, with twenty audio CDs, he is specialized in the art music tradition of the Mašriq.

Rafka Rizk (singing & riq)

Holding a master’s degree in music and musicology from Antonine University, teaches the vocal music tradition of the Nahḍa era at the Faculty of Music and Musicology of Antonine University, being one of the few depositaries of this art in Lebanon. She is also an active chanter and singer in the Maqām Festival Ensemble.

Ghassan Sahhab (qānūn)

Holds a PhD in Ethnomusicology from Université Paris Nanterre and is among the very few scholars in the Arab world who combine advanced academic research with professional performance practice on the qānūn, mastering the instrument in the style of the Egyptian Nahda era. He has released musical recordings and performed live on renowned stages, is the co-founder and musical director of the Meʿẓaf Initiative (Lebanon), and teaches musicology and qānūn at Antonine University. In 2025, he was awarded the SFAM–Musurgia Prize by the French Society for Musical Analysis and the journal Musurgia for an applied research article in modal analysis, marking a scholarly first as the first researcher from the Arab world to receive this distinction in musicology. He also served as a member of a specialized scientific committee for the documentation of Arabic maqāmāt and rhythms at the First Arab Music Congress held in Riyadh (2025), is a member of the Board of Directors of the Arab Music Archiving and Research Foundation (AMAR), and a member of the Maqām Festival Ensemble and its qānūn player.
